Shubman Gill Opens Up About When He Learned of the ODI Captaincy Switch

Shubman Gill is set to begin his tenure as India’s ODI captain during the upcoming tour of Australia later this month.

The newly appointed India ODI captain revealed how he learned about the leadership change after BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced the squads for the white-ball tour of Australia. The announcement confirmed thatShubman Gill will succeed Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain.

The squads also feature Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who will return to international cricket for the first time since India’s ICC Champions Trophy triumph in March 2025. Both players have been away from the international scene—retiring from T20Is last year and from Test cricket in May—playing only in the 2025 IPL since then.

Gill’s promotion is seen as part of a broader transformation under head coach Gautam Gambhir, emphasizing long-term planning and continuity in the Indian team.

Shubman Gill has shared that he found out about his appointment as India’s ODI captain just before the first Test against the West Indies, even though the official announcement came only after India wrapped up the match in two and a half days.

The 25-year-old will succeed Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain and is set to lead the team in the upcoming series against Australia later this month.

“Yes, it was announced in the middle of a Test match, but I got to know a little before that. It obviously is a big responsibility and an even bigger honour. I’m very excited to lead my country in this format,” Shubman Gill said ahead of the second Test in Delhi.

Having also captained India in Test cricket, Shubman Gill described the past few months as a whirlwind, but emphasized that his focus is entirely on the future.

“The last few months have been very exciting for me. But I’m really looking forward to what the future holds. I want to stay as present as possible and don’t want to dwell on past achievements, either personal or as a team. I just want to look ahead and win everything in the months to come,” he added.
