Temba Bavuma Leads South Africa to Historic WTC Final Victory Over Australia. South Africa, under the captaincy of Temba Bavuma, clinched a historic win against Australia in the final of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25. The emotional triumph marked South Africa’s first ICC title in 27 years, as they defeated Australia by five wickets at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
After winning the toss, Temba Bavuma chose to bowl first — a decision that paid off thanks to a sensational bowling effort, led by Kagiso Rabada who claimed a five-wicket haul. Australia were bowled out for just 212. However, South Africa’s batting faltered in their first innings as they were dismissed for 138, giving the Aussies a 74-run lead.
The Proteas bounced back strongly with the ball in the second innings, restricting Australia to 207 and setting themselves a target of 282. South Africa chased it down with a commanding batting display.
Aiden Markram led the charge with a stunning 136, while Temba Bavuma contributed a valuable 66. Wiaan Mulder (27) and David Bedingham (21*) also chipped in with important runs to secure the win with five wickets in hand.
Temba Bavuma: “Hopefully, This is Just the Beginning”

Temba Bavuma expressed confidence and pride after the victory, hoping that this ICC title would be the first of many for his team. He also showered praise on teammates Kagiso Rabada and Aiden Markram for their standout performances.
“Hopefully this is one of many. KG is a huge player—he’ll be in the ICC Hall of Fame in a few years. There was some controversy around him, but he showed his true class. Markram was outstanding too. Stats matter, but what we value most is character—and Aiden has that in abundance.”
Speaking about the team’s journey, he added, “He’s another key player for us. As a team, we fought our way into the final. Some doubted our path, saying we only beat weaker sides—this win is for them. I’m sure everyone back home is celebrating.”
