India Women defeated Sri Lanka Women by 59 runs via the DLS method in the opening match of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. The tournament got off to a spectacular start as co-hosts India and Sri Lanka faced off on September 30, 2025, at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.
ICC Women: The day began with a heartfelt musical tribute to the late Zubeen Garg, a celebrated icon of Assam. Acclaimed artists Papon, Joi Barua, and the esteemed Shillong Chamber Choir honored his legacy with moving renditions of his most popular works, touching the hearts of the home audience.
Ahead of the match, the national anthems were performed by renowned Bollywood singer Shreya Ghoshal for India and Nuwandhika Kumari for Sri Lanka. Shreya Ghoshal later returned during the mid-innings break to perform the official tournament anthem along with a lively medley of her hit songs, adding extra vibrancy to the tournament’s opening day.
This grand beginning not only celebrated cricket but also marked a significant moment for women’s sports in India, signaling the start of a World Cup full of promise and excitement.
In addition, the BCCI honored 16 former Indian women cricketers, including former captains Shanta Rangaswamy, Pramila Bhatt, Purnima Rau, Anjum Chopra, and Mithali Raj, as well as ICC Hall of Famers Diana Eduljee and Neetu David, recognizing their invaluable contributions to the sport.

The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 kicked off in spectacular fashion as India faced Sri Lanka in Guwahati, drawing a record-breaking crowd. Nearly 23,000 fans packed the ACA Stadium to witness thrilling cricket action, live performances, and a vibrant musical tribute to a local icon.
The match attracted 22,843 spectators—the highest ever for a group-stage game at any ICC Women’s event. The previous record of 15,935 was set during the India vs Pakistan clash at Dubai International Stadium in 2024.
After being restricted to 124/6, India Women staged a strong recovery, thanks to half-centuries from Deepti Sharma and Amanjot Kaur, finishing with 269/8 in 47 overs. Sri Lanka’s Inoka Ranaweera impressed with 4/46 in 9 overs.
Chasing 270, Sri Lanka managed only 211 runs, with Chamari Athapaththu top-scoring at 43. Deepti Sharma claimed 3/54, while Sneh Rana and Shree Charani chipped in with two wickets each. India secured a 59-run victory via the DLS method.
