Sarfaraz Khan Signals Strong Comeback with Consecutive Centuries

Right-handed batter Sarfaraz Khan is showing no signs of slowing down as he pushes to reclaim a spot in India’s Test playing XI ahead of the home season starting October 2 against the West Indies. Overlooked for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, Sarfaraz appears determined to make his mark. On Tuesday, the 27-year-old scored yet another century for Mumbai against Haryana in the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament.

Sarfaraz reached his century in the final session of Day 1, taking just 99 balls and sending Ishant Bharadwaj over the boundary for a massive six to mark the milestone. He soaked in the applause from his non-striker and the Mumbai camp before being dismissed for 111 by Parth Vats.

The aggressive batter had already started the domestic season in style, hitting 138 not out against TNCA XI in the Buchi Babu opener, including ten fours and sixes at the Gojan College ground. In both innings, Sarfaraz maintained an attacking mindset, refusing to let bowlers dictate terms. Even while battling cramps against Haryana, he persisted and reached his century, sending a clear message to BCCI selectors Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

With Karun Nair and Sai Sudharsan failing to capitalize on opportunities during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, an opening exists at No.3 and in the lower middle order. Whether Sarfaraz’s consistent form earns him a spot against the West Indies remains to be seen.

Sarfaraz Khan warms the bench in Australia

Sarfaraz Khan was included in India’s Test squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, where India lost 1-3, but the right-hander did not feature in a single match Down Under. Last year, he had a memorable innings, scoring 150 in the second innings of the Bengaluru Test against New Zealand. However, he managed just 21 runs across the next four innings on spinning tracks in Pune and Mumbai.

Sarfaraz also featured in India A’s squad for the unofficial Tests against England Lions. He impressed with 92 runs in the first game but was subsequently dropped for the second match.

So far, the 27-year-old has played 11 Tests for India, amassing 371 runs at an average of 37.10. With the home season approaching, Sarfaraz is determined to leverage his strong domestic form and stake a claim for a regular spot in the playing XI.
