MS Dhoni Seeks Trademark for ‘Captain Cool’ to Use in Sports Ventures. Former Indian captain MS Dhoni has applied to trademark his iconic nickname, ‘Captain Cool.’ The legendary wicket-keeper batsman aims to secure exclusive rights to the name for his sports and entertainment businesses, including sports training, coaching, and related services.
The nickname ‘Captain Cool’ has long been synonymous with MS Dhoni, reflecting his calm and composed demeanor on the field — a term widely embraced by fans and the media alike. According to reports, the application has been accepted by the Trade Marks Registry portal and is currently open for public notice.
MS Dhoni lawyer, Mansi Aggarwal, told The Indian Express that the trademark filing encountered some initial obstacles. The registry raised concerns about the existence of a similar trademark, which could potentially cause confusion.
“Delighted to share a recent development from the field of trademark law that highlights the growing importance of personality rights and acquired distinctiveness in overcoming grounds for refusal,” Aggarwal remarked.
Despite this, Dhoni’s legal team successfully argued that ‘Captain Cool’ has been closely identified with the cricketer for many years and is widely recognized by media and fans. They further contended that since the trademark pertains specifically to sports and entertainment services, the risk of confusion with existing trademarks is minimal.
MS Dhoni is widely regarded as the most successful captain in Indian cricket history.

MS Dhoni retired from international cricket in August 2020 but continues to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In the 2025 season, he captained the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), although the team was unable to qualify for the playoffs.
Earlier this month, MS Dhoni was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame by the International Cricket Council, becoming the 11th Indian cricketer to receive this prestigious honor for his immense contributions to Indian cricket.
