Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings (PBKS) fell short by six runs in the IPL 2025 final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer spoke openly about the defeat in the final held at the Narendra Modi International Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, June 3rd. Though visibly disappointed, Iyer acknowledged the efforts of the support staff and praised the young players for their fearless performances throughout the tournament.
After winning the toss, Iyer chose to field first. PBKS bowlers did well to limit RCB to 190 runs on a challenging pitch, setting what seemed like a chaseable target and a chance to end their 18-year title drought.
However, the young PBKS side struggled under pressure during the chase. Even Iyer couldn’t deliver the crucial innings, while Josh Inglis (39) and Shashank (61* not out) fought hard to keep the team in the game. Ultimately, the RCB bowlers proved too strong, restricting PBKS to 184 and securing a six-run victory.
Reflecting on the match, Iyer said it was a par score given the conditions and commended the RCB bowling attack, especially Krunal Pandya’s experience and impact. He added:
“Honestly, I’m dejected, but the way our boys stepped up was commendable. It just wasn’t our day, but credit goes to our support staff, owners, and everyone involved. After the previous game, I felt 200 was a par score.”
“They bowled exceptionally well, with Krunal’s experience being a key factor. I’m proud of every individual in this team, especially the youngsters playing their first season — they showed tremendous fearlessness.”
Shreyas Iyer said, “Hopefully, we’ll be here next season and play some good cricket.”

Shreyas Iyer expressed confidence that they will clinch the title next year. He said: “We wouldn’t have come this far without them, and they deserve all the credit. Our goal is to be back here and lift the trophy next season. Every time we took the field, we believed we could win the game. Hopefully, we’ll return next season and play some great cricket.”
Shreyas Iyer finished IPL 2025 as PBKS’s top run-scorer, amassing 604 runs in 17 matches at an average of 50. He also notched six half-centuries, with his highest score being an unbeaten 97.
