Former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel has shared his thoughts on how ODI captain Shubman Gill should handle senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who will be playing under him in the upcoming Australia series.

Patel believes that Gill will face no challenges in managing the two experienced cricketers. He also highlighted the significance of participating in domestic cricket as preparation ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

Parthiv believes Kohli and Rohit understand their role

Former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel believes Shubman Gill will have no trouble managing senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the upcoming Australia ODI series.

“I don’t think that it will be a problem because of the kind of characters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are. You look at Virat, he became the captain when MS Dhoni was still playing. He knows what role a senior plays in grooming a new captain,” Patel told PTI.

“Same thing was there when Rohit became the captain. Yes, Virat was not his senior but nevertheless a former skipper. They have gone through that phase and understand the decisions, which are about the betterment of Indian cricket. Both of them always come across as mature. I don’t think Shubman needs to put in his energies behind managing those senior players,” he added.

Patel also highlighted the challenge of maintaining form with fewer bilateral ODIs in the calendar. He emphasized the importance of senior players participating in domestic tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

“Two years is a long time, especially with fewer ODI games. Earlier, there used to be 20-25 games a year, and you’d stay on a roll, but now it’s different. The challenge is to keep themselves match-fit,” he said.

“I would definitely feel they should play the Vijay Hazare Trophy. It’s not about setting an example like ‘We have made Kohli and Rohit play Hazare.’ Playing Hazare Trophy will help their own game, and that in turn will help the Indian cricket team,” Patel added.

The upcoming Australian tour will play a key role in determining the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in ODIs. The management will assess their performances and how the team gels under Shubman Gill with the two senior players in the lineup.
