Shubman Gill scored a remarkable 754 runs in five Tests in England, registering four centuries. Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh praised the young batsman’s stellar performance during his debut series as India’s Test captain. After victories at Edgbaston and The Oval, India drew the five-match series 2-2.

Trailing 1-2 at one stage, the team mounted a strong fight to secure a draw in the fourth Test at Manchester, keeping the series alive.

Yuvraj highlighted that Shubman Gill, who was named ICC Men’s Player of the Month in July 2025, silenced doubts about his ability overseas and led from the front.

“There were many questions about his overseas record. He became captain and scored four Test hundreds. It’s unbelievable how Shubman Gill took responsibility when given the chance,” Yuvraj told ICC Digital during the ‘50 Days To Go’ Women’s Cricket World Cup event.

“Very proud of him. Even though it’s a drawn series, it feels like a win for us because it’s a young team. Performing in England and proving yourself is never easy,” he added.

Across 10 innings, Shubman Gill scored 754 runs at an average of 75.40, including twin hundreds of 269 and 169 in the Edgbaston Test. Shubman Gill became only the second Indian captain, after Virat Kohli, to score a double century abroad and the first to do so in England. His tally is also the highest by an Indian batsman-captain in an English Test series.

Shubman Gill: “Washington and Jadeja’s centuries were the turning point” – Yuvraj Singh on India’s England series triumph

Yuvraj Singh hails Shubman Gill for his leadership and batting in England, saying, 'There were many doubts about his overseas record.

Yuvraj Singh lauded the remarkable partnership between all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, highlighting their resilience and crucial contributions that helped India secure a draw in Manchester.

“The defining moment of the series was India drawing the Test match. It’s rare to see Washington and Jadeja score centuries and play such a pivotal role in saving a Test. That says a lot. Jadeja has been a mainstay for years, but seeing a young player like Washington Sundar step up and deliver was incredible,” Yuvraj said.

Even with the absence of veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who had retired from Test cricket just before the squad announcement, Yuvraj praised the team’s grit.

“Going to England with a young squad comes with immense pressure. Filling the shoes of players like Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma is never easy, but the team faced it head-on,” he added.
