Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket just before India’s tour of England began. The former Indian captain was thrilled as his team secured a commanding 336-run victory over England in the second Test of the ongoing five-match series. This win marked India’s first Test triumph at Edgbaston, Birmingham, in nine attempts.
After being asked to bat first, India posted an imposing total of 587 in their first innings, spearheaded by Shubman Gill’s career-best 269, which included 30 boundaries and three sixes. Ravindra Jadeja and Yashasvi Jaiswal supported him well with valuable half-centuries.
England responded with 407 runs, thanks to a massive 303-run partnership between Jamie Smith (184) and Harry Brook (158). However, six English batsmen were dismissed without scoring, leaving India with a strong lead of 180 runs.
Virat Kohli: In their second innings, Gill once again impressed with a score of 161. KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant played stylishly to push India’s total to 427 for 6 declared, setting England a daunting target of 608 runs to win. Jadeja contributed another half-century in this innings.

By the end of day four, Akash Deep had dismantled England’s top order, reducing them to 72/4 by dismissing Ben Duckett and Joe Root. He continued his stellar bowling on day five, taking the wickets of Ollie Pope and Harry Brook. Despite resistance from Ben Stokes (33), Brydon Carse (38), and Jamie Smith (88), England were eventually bowled out for 271.
India secured a convincing win, largely thanks to Akash Deep’s remarkable 10-wicket match haul, including 6/99 in the second innings.
Following the victory, many former Indian cricketers expressed their excitement on X (formerly Twitter). Among them was former India Test captain Virat Kohli.
Kohli had retired from Test cricket just before the Indian squad for the England tour was announced, ending an illustrious career with 123 Tests, 9,230 runs, and 30 centuries.
Despite his retirement, Kohli was thrilled to see the Indian team performing so well under new captain Shubman Gill, especially after the setback of losing the first Test in Leeds. He praised the batsmen, bowlers, and Gill for their outstanding efforts.
“Great victory for India at Edgbaston. Fearless and kept pushing England to the wall. Brilliantly led by Shubman with the bat and in the field and impactful performances from everyone. Special mention to Siraj and Akash for the way they bowled on this pitch. @ShubmanGill @mdsirajofficial #AkashDeep,” Virat Kohli posted on X.
