Shubman Gill Historic Double, Akash Deep’s Impact Lead India to First Edgbaston Test Win

Shubman Gill’s new-age India delivered a statement performance at Edgbaston, crushing England by 336 runs to register their first-ever Test win at the venue in 10 attempts—and their first since 1967. It was a week of commanding batting, sharp leadership, and clinical execution as India not only levelled the series 1-1 but did so with a dominance rarely seen from Indian sides on English soil.

At the heart of this historic win was captain Shubman Gill himself. In just his second Test as skipper, the 25-year-old rose to the occasion with twin centuries—becoming the first Indian captain to score a double hundred in England and only the second, after Sunil Gavaskar, to score centuries in both innings of a Test. His 269 in the first innings was a masterclass in timing, patience, and control, surpassing Virat Kohli’s 254* to become the highest individual score by an Indian captain. He followed that with a blistering 161 off 162 balls in the second innings, launching India to an unreachable 608-run lead.

After being asked to bat on a flat Edgbaston pitch, India capitalised. Despite early wickets, Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja put together a crucial 203-run partnership, with Jadeja’s 89 complementing Shubman Gill brilliance. Later, Washington Sundar’s 144-run stand with Gill pushed India to 587—England’s highest runs conceded under Ben Stokes’ leadership.

England’s top order crumbled under pressure. With Jasprit Bumrah rested, Akash Deep stepped in and impressed alongside Mohammed Siraj. Siraj took six wickets in total, including a five-for, while Deep claimed four in the first innings. In India’s second dig, KL Rahul bounced back with a solid 55, Rishabh Pant blasted 65 off 58, and Jadeja added an unbeaten 69, leading to a declaration at 608.

England showed some fight through Harry Brook, Ollie Pope, and Ben Stokes, but rain on Day 5 cut into their survival time. Once play resumed, India struck swiftly—Akash Deep removed Pope, Prasidh Krishna got Brook, and a clever Gill-led tactic saw Jadeja and Sundar trap Stokes before lunch. The clinical display sealed a memorable win, highlighting India’s depth, belief, and a leader in Gill ready to script a new era.

A fifer for Akash Deep

While Mohammed Siraj starred with the ball in England’s first innings, it was Akash Deep who stole the show in the second. The pacer delivered a brilliant spell of sustained pressure, finishing with a career-best 6/99 to help India close out the match. He dismantled England’s top order with key wickets of Ben Duckett (25), Ollie Pope (24), and Joe Root (6), before returning in the second session to end Jamie Smith’s valiant 88, dashing any hopes of a miraculous English escape.

Although Akash was the standout performer, India’s bowling effort was truly collective—Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar all chipped in with crucial wickets. Backing them was India’s much-improved slip fielding, which made a visible difference after the missed chances in Leeds.

England were bowled out for 271, handing India a massive 336-run victory to level the series 1-1. The teams now head to Lord’s for the third Test, starting July 10.
