India’s Lower-Order Collapse Costs Them the First Test at Headingley

Shubman Gill-led India suffered a five-wicket defeat in the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds, as the hosts successfully chased 371 runs, powered by a brilliant 149 from opener Ben Duckett. The loss highlighted India’s recurring problem: a fragile lower-middle order that twice allowed England back into the game. In the first innings, India lost their final seven wickets for just 41 runs, and in the second innings, their last six wickets fell for 31 runs.
India had multiple opportunities to close out the match but failed due to their tailenders’ poor showing. This ultimately proved costly as England took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
During the first innings, India looked poised for a massive total of 550-600 but collapsed dramatically, finishing at 471. Similarly, in the second innings, India aimed to set a target exceeding 420 but a cluster of wickets fell, allowing England to chase 371 comfortably.
The internet buzzed with criticism of India’s non-existent tail, with many pointing out the lower order’s inability to contribute crucial runs under pressure. Former India wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik humorously summed up the situation on Sky Sports Cricket, comparing India’s batting lineup to “a dobermann dog.”

Jasprit Bumrah has a rare off day at the office

Jasprit Bumrah, who shone with five wickets in India’s first innings, struggled in the second, failing to claim a single wicket. Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur each took two wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja managed one.
“It’s definitely more game by game, you know there’s a good break after the Test match, so once we’re close to the match we’ll see,” Gill explained.
India and England now prepare for the second Test, starting July 2 at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
